Loss
Loss: The fact or process of losing something or someone. The state or feeling of grief when deprived of someone or something of value.
How do you deal with loss? There isn't a right or wrong way, hell most of the time I don't deal with it in the same exact way. For some strange reason myself and my friends from high school have become accustom to loss...death to be exact. Some call it a curse but for me it is that harsh stab in the chest of reality that no one is really here forever.
Loss started for me when I was 11 with like most, grandparents who fought long hard battles of stroke and illness. However the losses didn't stop with grandparents...by college I started losing friends, peers, other family members. I remember my roommate finding it strange that I'd even been to 1 funeral let alone 2 in 1 day. To this day I have been to more or just about equal funerals as to weddings...not a fun statistic in my book.
Unfortunately I am used to the phone call, text message, and facebook post informing me of another loss. Last night when I got one of those messages I was at once numb, couldn't even bring myself to cry because if I had I probably wouldn't have stopped. Like I said each reaction is different, how I coped 8 years ago and how I cope today are totally different...but the pain is still the same.
I have lost all my grandparents, an aunt, my college roommate, and countless others but none more than my group of friends from high school. There are too many to count, too many that became angels before we were ready to let them go. I don't have any answers as to why they are gone I just know that God must have had bigger plans for them and that I will see them again.
The older I get the more I reflect on the friends I had, the ones I lost, and the ones I want back. Loss makes you call up that old friend and forget everything that was said or not said and just tell them you miss them. Now that I'm a mother I cannot imagine having to bury my child, no parent should have to.
All I can do now is try to be a better daughter, wife, mother, sister, and friend because I of all people should know that it can all change with a phone call...

A Letter To Myself
Dear 17 year old me,
Your nearing the end of your high school journey, don't rush it, these will be the days you look back on, good and bad. You will only apply to one college and you'll get in, the only person from your school to go. This last year and a half in high school will be full of friends, parties, fights, and makeups.
You will meet the boy you'll marry six years from now this summer! No one will think it will last...
Now this boy will be older than you but that doesn't keep you from all your high school friends, you will make him take you to prom, have your first college party experience (it won't be pretty), and he'll be there when you graduate. Relationships aren't perfect and this one won't be, but you'll both put in the work and in nine years you'll get the best surprise ever...a baby!
When you go to college you'll meet some amazing girls, they will be with you for four years! When you move in with 3 of them the fights will be epic but somehow you'll always forgive and forget. So much so that 3 of you will then move in with 2 more girls and be in for a wild ride that ends with your dad buying you a house in the middle of the year. You won't learn your lesson and the next year 1 of your former roommates will move back in with you and boy will it be crazy! Listen, don't let this friendship pass you by like I did, you will get a phone call in a few years and she won't be here anymore.
You will go to London to study abroad and fall in love with the city! Your Godmother lives outside the city and you will see her for the first time in over 20 years. The classes you take are amazing, you get to go to the theater every night! You'll travel to Prague and hangout with one of your friends that lives there! Your supposed to travel on to France and Italy after your classes but you will be sick and have to come home...more on that later.
The sickness from London will be with you for awhile, there won't be many answers and you'll have to withdraw from school to deal with it. You will go back to London and get engaged...it is wonderful! If you listen to one thing please listen to this...do not transfer back home! If you do please do not take psych 412...it will ruin you for your short time at VCU. Oh and from the beginning you should have been an education major and not a stubborn history major!
The next years will move quickly, the highs will be high and the lows will be lows, but you will come out on top! You'll get to be a mom and watch your son grow into an amazing little boy. Have fun, don't rush through your life!

River Olympics
Every Labor Day weekend our river community hosts a little Olympics, it has been going on since before I was born! There used to be more events such as croquet, sailing, and horseshoes. We still have swimming, golf, paddle tennis, and tennis! I was so excited for Hudson to participate this year as it holds such wonderful memories for me.
Thank goodness nobody got a picture of the Mom and Tot race b/c the water was freezing per usual and I may have had a horrified look on my face the whole time ;) After our little race Hudson searched for pennies and soda cans.
Hudson's cousin Emma, Uncle Lee, and Aunt Mindy came over from the farm with GiGi and the kids had a blast playing tennis until Hudson crashed hard from his day of activity and slept for almost 4 hours!
Uncle Todd & Hudson
Uncle Todd is a little rusty on how to pick up a wild toddler
Bonnie and Todd...you can tell how windy it was
waiting patiently for the pennies to be dropped

Stay Tuned for Friday!!! I am hosting an awesome Stella & Dot Party...I might even decided to giveaway something too :)
